City hall swelled Monday with about 100 people who wanted to talk about whether to build a new arena to replace Pershing Center -- even though the question at hand was primarily whether to put the issue to a public vote.

After years of planning, the Haymarket arena is coming closer to being built. On Monday, the Lincoln City Council will vote on whether to let voters decide the fate of the proposed Haymarket arena.

Today the Lincoln City Council meets to decide whether the citizens of Lincoln will have the ability to decide whether or not to support the construction of a West Haymarket Arena. This arena would be the new home of Husker Basketball, both men’s and women’s, and would replace the cramped Pershing Center as an entertainment and sports venue.

As the city of Lincoln prepared the arena finance plan - detailed in the Lincoln Journal Star on Jan. 31 - it invited a group of local citizens to review its assumptions. I was part of that group and want to provide more insight into the conservative nature of the city's plan.
