Editorial, 4/11: Arena site has most potential

Some Lincoln residents say the arena proposal that will be on the May 11 ballot is the right idea but in the wrong location.

Those voters ought to think again.

A close look shows that the Haymarket site has distinct advantages over likely alternatives.

The overriding reason why the arena should be built as proposed in a redeveloped area west of the existing Haymarket area is that the locations has the best potential for a whole lot of fun.

The Haymarket already is a vibrant district with a wide variety of restaurants, bars, retail shops and businesses. When and if the arena is built, more establishments will open in the 400-acre redevelopment area. Thousands of parking spaces will be added.

This means that anyone who goes to an event at the arena, whether it is a basketball game or concert, can stop off before or after to mingle with friends. Out-of-town visitors could park their cars, check into a hotel and walk to the arena and other entertainment spots.

That experience would not be possible if the arena were built in any of the other locations commonly suggested, such as a site along Interstate 80 or near the Lancaster Event Center. There would be nothing else to do there. It would not be as enjoyable, and the community would not gain as many economic benefits.

Take the present-day situation with the Devaney Center. It's far from the entertainment districts. People attending events there don't have the option of stopping for a drink or a meal within walking distance. Consequently, they are more likely to drive to the event and drive away.
